酸梅汤 · Suan Mei Tang · Chinese sour plum drink

What Is Suanmeitang?

Suanmeitang is a Chinese sour-plum beverage tradition with a sour-sweet flavor and many recipe variations—not one fixed ancient formula or a modern detox claim.

English shoppers may call it sour plum tea, but the finished beverage does not automatically contain Camellia sinensis.

Name & category

What Does “Suanmeitang” Mean?

The practical English category is Chinese sour plum drink.

酸梅汤 · Suanmeitang / Suan Mei Tang

The character 汤 can be translated literally as soup/decoction, but “drink” is clearer for a modern beverage page.

Is It a Tea?

Not necessarily. “Sour plum tea” is useful search language, not a formula fact. Suanmeitang is better treated as a botanical beverage category.

Typical, not universal

What Are Typical Ingredients?

Common recipes may use the ingredients below, while other versions can add tangerine peel, roselle, mulberry or other foods/botanicals.

Wumei

Processed/dried plum material; exact botanical identity belongs to the product/material record.

Hawthorn

Common in some modern recipe examples.

Licorice

Formula-dependent; current product label controls.

Osmanthus

Rock Sugar

One common sweetening approach; not universal.

Important: these are recipe examples—not the SanYuan formula and not a test of authenticity. “Authentic Suanmeitang must contain exactly…” is intentionally avoided.
