What Is Incense Made Of?

A material-first guide to aromatic ingredients, binders, cores, fragrance and formula transparency.

There is no single recipe for incense. Depending on the product and manufacturing style, incense can combine aromatic materials, a combustible base, binder, an optional support core, added fragrance and optional processing or color aids.

The exact formula matters more than the scent name, “natural” badge or country label on the front of the box.

Short Answer

A stick can be understood as a material system: aroma + burnable base + binder + optional support core + optional added fragrance. Some ingredients can play more than one role. A fragrant wood powder may provide both scent and burnable material, while a bark-derived powder may contribute both binding and combustion behavior.

Woods, herbs, spices, flowers, roots, bark, resins, gums, extracts or aromatic oils can contribute scent.

Examples do not describe every SanYuan formula.

Base / Burnable Matrix

Wood powder, botanical powder, bark-derived powder or, in some systems, charcoal/carbonaceous material can support a continuous smolder.

Aromatic and base roles can overlap.
03 · Structure

Binder

A binding system helps dry powders form, survive shaping and drying, maintain strength and support controlled smoldering.

Exact binder is product-specific.
04 · Physical Support

Core / Structure

Some sticks use a bamboo or wood support. Coreless sticks omit this separate center support.

Coreless does not mean binder-free.
05 · Aroma System

Added Fragrance

Some products add aromatic oils, extracts or fragrance compounds separately from the bulk botanical/wood matrix.

“Not specified” is not “fragrance-free.”
06 · Optional

Color / Processing / Combustion Aids

Some commercial formulations may use colorants or processing/combustion aids. They should only be disclosed as SanYuan facts when the actual BOM confirms them.

Do not infer from stick color.
There is no globally valid formula percentage for “incense.” Published research may document one factory or sample formulation, but that cannot be turned into a universal recipe.

Product names and scent names are not ingredient lists. Material identity, source and percentage are separate evidence questions.

“Sandalwood” should be tied to the actual material record. A sandalwood scent name does not prove real sandalwood powder, species, origin or percentage.

Protected-Material Context

Agarwood / Aloeswood / Oud

Real agarwood is associated with agarwood-producing Aquilaria and Gyrinops taxa. An “oud scent” label alone does not prove real agarwood wood.

Botanical Mix

Herbs & Spices

Incense can use herbs, spices, roots, bark or flowers. “Herbal incense” is still only a product description, not proof that every ingredient is an herb.

Resinous Materials

Resins & Gums

Frankincense, myrrh, benzoin and other resinous materials can contribute aroma, texture or burn behavior. Resin is not automatically “the binder.”

Material authenticity and finished-product percentage are different questions. Confirming a botanical material is present does not prove that the product is “pure” or contains a specific percentage.

A binder is a structural ingredient or binding system that helps powdered materials form a stable incense product. Depending on the formula, it can affect workability, strength, drying, cracking, smolder continuity and ash/physical behavior.

Binder type alone does not prove smoke level, safety, natural status or fragrance quality.

What Is Makko / Tabu Powder?

Makko/tabu is frequently discussed in incense making, but the term should be used carefully and not automatically assigned to every coreless or “natural” incense.

Educational and manufacturing sources describe makko/tabu-type material as a bark-derived powder associated with Machilus-related trees and used for binding and combustible properties in some East Asian incense systems.

Binder and core solve different problems

Bamboo-Core vs Coreless Incense

The binder holds the incense mixture together. A core is a separate physical support inside some sticks. They are not the same component.

Does Incense Contain Charcoal?

Manufacturing literature documents commercial systems using charcoal/carbonaceous material, wood powder, adhesive/binder, fragrance and a bamboo core. Other systems rely more heavily on wood/botanical powders and bark-derived binders without a charcoal-based blank.

Never infer charcoal from black or dark stick color.

A product’s smell can come from intrinsic raw-material aroma, an added aromatic component, or a combination. Those possibilities should be disclosed separately.

A useful formula card answers nine concrete questions. This is far more informative than a single “Premium Natural Incense” badge.

Protected & High-Risk Materials

Some incense material claims require species, source and trade review. Protected-material status is separate from whether a formula is described as natural.

Agarwood-Producing Taxa

Aquilaria spp. / Gyrinops spp.

The production brief cites current CITES materials placing agarwood-producing Aquilaria and Gyrinops taxa in Appendix II. Exact requirements can depend on taxon, product form, annotation, route and applicable exemptions/documentation.

Red Sanders / “Red Sandalwood”

Pterocarpus santalinus

This is a different botanical entity from true Santalum sandalwoods and is listed in CITES Appendix II. Do not collapse “red sandalwood” and Santalum album into one material.

True Sandalwood Example

Santalum album

The production brief cites current CITES Secretariat material stating that Santalum album is not listed in the CITES Appendices. This does not remove the need for authentic material identity, origin or other applicable sourcing evidence.

“Oud scent” does not automatically trigger the same CITES conclusion as verified agarwood wood. “Sandalwood” does not have one universal taxon or legal status. Exact material identity comes first.

Does Composition Tell You Smoke or Safety?

Formula and structure can influence combustion, smoke, scent and ash. But P035 should not predict a safety outcome or low-smoke result from the ingredient list alone.

Natural → Safe?

No. Natural wording does not establish a safety outcome.

Coreless → Low Smoke?

No. Coreless is a construction attribute, not a smoke measurement.

No Bamboo → Safe?

No. The absence of a bamboo support core does not establish overall combustion safety.

Charcoal → Always More Smoke?

Do not infer that universally. Smoke needs an actual product test under defined conditions.

What is incense made of?

There is no universal formula. Incense can combine aromatic woods or botanicals, a combustible base, binder, added fragrance and—depending on the format—a separate bamboo or wood support core.

What is the powder that holds incense together?

A binder helps powdered incense form and remain structurally stable. Makko/tabu-type bark powder is one documented example; other binder systems also exist.

Is makko in every incense stick?

No. It is one incense-making material, not a universal ingredient.

Does every incense stick have a bamboo core?

No. Coreless incense has no separate support core.

Is coreless incense more natural?

Not automatically. Coreless describes structure; natural describes the complete formula.

Is coreless incense low smoke?

Not automatically. Smoke is a separate measurable product attribute.

Is herbal incense made only from herbs?

No. The term does not prove the full formula. A product may also contain wood powder, binder, fragrance or a support core.

Does sandalwood scent mean real sandalwood?

Not necessarily. Check whether the product uses real sandalwood material, oil/extract, a fragrance accord or a combination.

Does incense contain synthetic fragrance?

Some products may; others may not. SanYuan should state the current added-fragrance status instead of making a category-wide assumption.

Is natural incense safer?

Natural wording alone does not establish safety or lower smoke.

Does all incense contain charcoal?

No. Some commercial formulas use charcoal/carbonaceous bases; other formulas use wood or botanical systems.

Is all sandalwood protected under CITES?

No. Red sandalwood/red sanders (Pterocarpus santalinus) is CITES Appendix II, while the production brief cites current CITES Secretariat documentation stating Santalum album is not listed in the CITES Appendices.

Is agarwood protected?

The production brief identifies agarwood-producing Aquilaria and Gyrinops taxa as CITES Appendix II; exact trade requirements depend on taxon, product form, annotation and route.

Does a COA tell me every ingredient?

Not necessarily. A COA can cover one material or batch specification; the BOM/formula record is the primary source for complete intended composition.

Why not publish percentages for every formula?

Percentages should only be published when verified, stable and intentionally public. Material/category transparency can still be meaningful without disclosing proprietary ratios.
