The Nine TCM Body Constitutions
This guide explains all nine categories on one substantive page; it does not create nine thin child pages.
Core Principle
The nine constitutions are a traditional Chinese medicine framework used to describe patterns of constitution. They are not equivalent to modern medical diagnoses and should not be used to prescribe treatment or guarantee a product match.
The Nine-Type Framework
The framework is commonly presented as one Balanced category plus eight additional pattern categories. People can show mixed or changing features.
Balanced Constitution
Reference category; traditional descriptions may emphasize relatively harmonious overall presentation and fewer pronounced features from other pattern categories.
Boundary: Balanced does not mean medically disease-free or perfect health.
Qi-Deficient Constitution
Traditional descriptions may include lower perceived vitality, easy tiredness, softer voice or reduced endurance depending on the framework.
Boundary: Do not equate with anemia, chronic fatigue syndrome, heart disease or endocrine disease.
Yang-Deficient Constitution
Traditional descriptions may emphasize sensitivity to cold, preference for warmth and lower warmth/energy sensations.
Boundary: Not automatically hypothyroidism, poor circulation or endocrine failure.
Yin-Deficient Constitution
Traditional descriptions may emphasize dryness, heat-like sensations and other framework-specific features.
Boundary: Do not map automatically to dehydration, hormone deficiency, menopause, fever or inflammatory disease.
Phlegm-Dampness Constitution
A traditional pattern term that may include heaviness, damp/phlegm terminology and other presentation features depending on the source.
Boundary: Not an obesity, metabolic-syndrome or respiratory-disease diagnosis.
Damp-Heat Constitution
A traditional pattern concept combining traditional “damp” and “heat” descriptors.
Boundary: Not equivalent to infection, liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease or fever.
Blood-Stasis Constitution
A traditional pattern term used within the constitution framework.
Boundary: Must not be equated with a blood clot, thrombosis, stroke risk or vascular diagnosis.
Qi-Stagnation Constitution
Traditional descriptions can include emotional/functional pattern language.
Boundary: Not the same as anxiety disorder, depression or another psychiatric diagnosis.
Special Inherited Constitution
Used in the framework for constitution tendencies described as inherited/special.
Boundary: Not a diagnosis of allergy, autoimmune disease or genetic disease.
A Constitution Is Broader Than One Photo
Traditional assessment can consider history, observed features, questions, tongue and other information. The SanYuan AI tool uses a narrower digital input.
Can a Person Have More Than One Constitution?
Traditional assessment can describe a dominant pattern, mixed features and changing features. Avoid treating a label as permanent identity.
Method
Questionnaire, observer or tool can differ.
Current State
Presentation may vary with context and time.
Mixed Features
More than one pattern can appear.
Longitudinal Claims
Need a defined repeated assessment method.
How the Explorer Uses This Guide
P071 owns the definitions; P070 owns the tool experience; P074 owns the technical method/validation; P072 owns photo privacy and consent.
